Virgin comics - In India?

Virgin comics was launched with great fanfare in India. Every newspaper carried photos of Shekhar Kapur and his team launching the comics in India. I was pretty excited. Some of the comics are to be written by Samit Basu and Ashok Banker. I was also pretty impressed with the illustrations shown in their website.

Inspite of all the hype, I am not able to get the comics in Bangalore. I called up all the big book stalls (Crosswords & Landmark). I have not yet tried Sapna Book House. I fear I will face the same answer there too. None of them have these comics and most of them have not heard about it.

Sadly, Virgin Comics do not seem to be interested in Indian market. If any one of you know or bought the comics in India, please let me know.

Hi Sathish, I'm not writing for Virgin Comics, despite what you (and I) have been reading in the Indian media. In Hindu Business Line I even read that I am supposedly going to produce a film based on one of their titles! Where do they get this 'information' from? I can't speak for Samit Basu, but I have yet to see a single issue of any of their comics. Do they even exist or is it all hype for hype's sake?

Looks like you and I and other desi comic fans will have to wait a while longer to see our great stories retold in graphic form. Incidentally, I can confirm that I am writing a very long epic story for DC's VERTIGO division based on Indian myth, but set in contemporary times. it's an original story and is as yet-untitled. I have worked on it for almost two years now, but unlike Virgin I haven't hyped it anywhere. I am hoping VERTIGO will see fit to launch it in India too at an affordable price for us desi comic fans.

All the best

Ashok

Thank you Ashok for you comments.

I would definitely look forward to your graphics comic book by Vertigo. Hopefully, Vertigo would make them available in India.

Hope so too, Sathish--and at an affordable price. Even us writers balk at the prices of graphic novels in bookstores. I will admit I've spent my time standing in the aisle at Landmark and reading a few graphic novels very quickly! (Of course, once I got hooked to some excellent titles, then I simply had to buy a few as well.)

yep Ashok.

the only graphics novel that I own is the - Buddha series (first volume) by osamu tezuka. great storyline and simple graphics in b&w.

I would love to own the other volumes of the same too.. but, I find it difficult to find them here too..

ne idea what r their popular titles?

pegasus,

In their website - http://www.virgincomics.com/home.html

they have a list of their series.. I can see them only in the website, not yet seen anything in a book shop.

I've heard that aren't available in Mumbai too..

So the comics seem to be Export Only?

Here is my review of the Sadhu, first issue.

Yes Ashok, Samit Basu would be doing two of the stories. It's there on his blog. Looking forward to your work too !

Hi Gautam Ghosh,

Please check the comment by Ashok Banker - he says that he is not involved inspite what is written in media.

and I think you have mistaken me for some one else. I wish I can write for them :). but, sadly or thankfully for the rest of the world - I am not writing any comics. :)

Thank you for the comments.
