Either way you are an Ilicha Vai

Scene 1 :

Sathish was driving the car and we reached a signal, where we had to turn left. We remembered it as a free left, were not too sure when the signal ahead (for both straight and left) turned red. Plus there was a lorry honking continously behind us. So we turned left, only to be stopped by the policeman. The law abiding citizens that we are, we realised our mistake, pulled over and payed the fine that was slapped on us. The rascal lorry driver who had been honking behind us sped away, even as the policeman tried to stop him.

Scene 2 :

An aquaintance of ours, had been driving his car and just as he reached the junction, the traffic light had turned Red. So he had immediately stopped his car and had waited for the Green. A car and a bike had been continously honking behind him and ofcourse he could do nothing other than to ignore it. The car and bike caught up with this person, two signals later, smashed his car windows and had then sped away, leaving him bruised due to the glass pieces. Was this an act of road rage ?

Anyway the lessons you pick from these incidents are - if you are good and break the rules accidentally, you pay penalty to the police department. If you are good and abide by the rules, you are at the mercy of the goondas. Wow. Either way in India, you are an Ilicha Vai.

The challenge is that you need to keep reiterating to yourself and to your children, that inspite of all these incidents, we should never waver from our core values. Doing the right thing is the way to be. That is the only hope for the society.

Ps : Ilicha vai is a Tamil term for people who are good/innocent, but are conned by the society around them.

Something like a 'Bechaara bhala aadmi' in Hindi?

Yes, you're dammed in if you do, and dammed if you don't! Pardon the language!

God that is upsetting. Am glad though you didn't face the goondas yourself. That is scary. What morons - why would they do that. I wish they had gotten punched right back in the face by your friend. Sometimes I feel like niceness doesn't pay off at all. Now they think they can get away with this all the time.
