What does home feel like ?
I remember it was more than 13 years back, when I visited my cousin and his wife in LA. I was in the US on a work assignment and after two months of no idlis and dosas for breakfast, my cousin's wife brought steaming plates of idlis to the table ! The icing on the cream was the Milagai podi with Idhayam Nallennai (Gingelly oil). It was a moment of delight to be able to sample that breakfast sitting in LA, miles away from home. The feeling of euphoria was indescribable.
A few days back, when I was sitting in my friend's house in England, having crispy dosas, Milagai Podi and Idhayam Nallennai, that same feeling of delight hit me. That's when I realised that the idlis, dosas and the Milagai podi could vary from house to house, but this brand of Oil is the same everywhere. So now I conclude that for me, the taste of Idhayam oil is the feeling of home. I think that's the reason why inspite of it being the most expensive brand of gingelly oil in the market, I am still loyal to it. The Milagai podi just does not taste the same without it !
What taste, fragrance, sight, touch makes you feel at home ? It will be interesting to hear what home means to different individuals !

A basket swing. Hot rice mixed with plain daal and ghee, with lemon pickle on the side and udad papad of the Lijjat brand. Incessant rains that do not let up for days. Autos that one can get into without having to check if they are willing to take one where one wants to go or bargaining with the fare- the metered fare being the default. The sound of the local trains that begins early before one wakes and goes on till after one goes to sleep- passing near one's home that is near the tracks. Mumbai.

DaaL-bhaat made by mom. Anything made by mom. Hot phulkas dished out to me straight from the tava, with a variety of chutneys apart from sabzi. Mangoes. Hyderabadi accented Hindi.

Chox, that "anything made my mom" is so true and brings back memories of the care free childhood :-)

You went to England with the kids for holidays? Write more about your holiday! Did the kids enjoy it?
Chapathis with aloo made like a gravy with tomatoes and green chillies - it totally reminds me of my mom's evening tiffin.
